Tackle it Tuesday: Food Storage

We've (ok, I) been thinking a lot about food storage. No, I haven't gotten it all together, but I am in the process. Our ward YW (YM?) are going down to the cannery next week and are going to do the canning for me!

I am hoping to get between 6 weeks and 3 months worth of stuff. I think it can happen. It will be so nice to get it all done. Unfortunately, living in an apartment isn't my ideal situation for storing food storage or the knowledge that we will be moving within the next 6 months. (Where we don't know yet, but it's the fact we have to pack 200lbs worth of wheat/oats/rice/ect ;)

I also think getting a 72 hour kit together is very important as well...and ours has been well underway for the past few years. I have to add and exchange things, but I think we are almost there. We are missing the food and clothing portion of it. But we have other things like toilet paper, first aid kits, flashlights, matches, soap, toothpaste...you get the picture.

How is your food storage coming along? 72 hour kits? Post a comment and let me know!!

*This is NOT a picture of my food storage...but I hope to one day have a huge storage area for it...oh won't that be great?!!*

Seems like we have a lot of supplies in our pantry and basement, but there is no organization. Good for you for getting it together. Here are some sites I was going to try: www.trackmyfoodstorage.com and www.foodstoragemadeeasy.net. We'll see how much I get around to :)

Let me know who you get it all organized! I have been wanting to start but don't know where to! We are also getting out 72 hr kit together. It is very important to me to get this completed before the end of the year!

Joe and I just spent some of our tax returns on our food storage. I've started on building our "3 month storage". And then after we get a house...hopefully, I think we'll do the whole cannery thing. I've been looking around something that tells you what you need, basics for food storage. Have you found anything. I really need to do our 72 hour kit, thank you for your inspiration;)

Good for you! I really didn't have much food storage until we bought our home. I was with you, who wants to move food storage?!

I used to think food storage was silly for our family because it used to only be Mark and me and we have always rented. In the past year I have since repented and I've been working very hard on getting it together. The thing that hit me is that I can always come up with an excuse, but when it comes down to needing food storage, excuses aren't going to help. It is so tacky, but we have our cases of cans stacked high in all the corners and sugar and flour under the side table in the front room. We have a years' supply of wheat in the kids' closet. :) It's funny, but space is no longer an excuse for me and I'm glad we are doing it! We just need our first aid kit and our 72 hour kit is complete. It's a good feeling to be on our way. there was an article in the Ensign last month that sounded exactly like what you said: just add a few extra items each time you shop. There is no reason to go into debt or try to do a years' supply all at once. I think that doing it gradually also sets a habit. We have $ set aside each month. SO funny...I never thought I would be passionate about food storage, but I am. It just gives me peace of mind knowing that we can take care of ourselves in a wide range of scenarios.

Excellent thoughts. I just updated our 72 hour kits as well and completed the ones for the girls. Yay for being prepared! When are you due again?

Funny you should mention this. Chad and I have been thinking and talking about this alot lately. It's all very overwhelming for me to be honest with you. SOOOOO.....if you have any ideas or tricks for the trade, PLEASE email them to me. I have no idea where to begin and Chad and I have both felt very strongly about doing better at it this year. PLUS having cash on hand in case of an emergency! PLEASE let me know. love ya.

We have quite a bit hidden in kid's closets and in a few storage cabinets but we definitely need more space before I can buy any more.
